BORNEO BULLETIN: ‘Students shine in public speaking competition’

THE four finalists of Brunei Essex (BruEssex) society’s flagship event ‘Pidato Face-off’ with the theme ‘nation growth through an empowered generation’ were bursting with talent.

The competition focussed on Brunei’s future development by 2035 and the youth’s roles in achieving Brunei Vision 2035.

It was organised under the counsel of the chairman, Sharifah Nur Baqiyah binti Malai Shahran, who is also the President of BruEssex society.

The programme highlighted the importance to developing the potential of youths that will help shape Brunei’s overall development. It also prepares the youth for employment in this fast-paced changing global landscape.

Wayne Newton, Key Account Manager of Royal Brunei Airlines was one of the guests invited to the face-off, alongside Irmawati binti Haji Ahmad, Director of Studies from the Brunei Students’ Unit. Newton and Irmawati with other two Brunei Students’ Union (BSU) officers were the judges for the competition.

Presenting an impromptu speech may be an overwhelming experience: gathering quality and reliable sources in less than 30 minutes can be challenging. Those were what the initial seven speakers had to go through to get to the final stage.

Judges for this year’s preliminary round included Hasif bin Nordin, the President of the BSU; Yasmin Abdullah, Vice President International for University of Essex; Raudhah, President of University of Essex Enactus; and Sharifah Nur Baqiyah.

This year’s finalist and winner Hafizah binti Ahmad from King’s College London used an evocative sizable voice to unite with her figurative speech on mental health.

Addressing the topic, she emphasised on how mental health is often not recognised as a real issue. “An individual’s mental state is swept under the rug, we are told to toughen up, or we’re told we’re overdramatic.” And how we should not ignore or treat someone’s mental state as inconsequential.

First runner up Md Umair Akmal bin Haji Noor Ahsffian delivered a speech about the importance of youth, “People always say we are important, the youth is important. And if you could not find the reason why, here’s the reason why; We are the backbone of our country.”

Second runner up, Ismah binti Idris highlighted that the key to substantial economic development is an efficient public transportation system, starting with the bus system in Brunei and how an efficient public transport can increase the accessibility of resources, from point ‘A’ to point ‘B’, creating more jobs in the field.

The third runner up Aseeya Hussin from SOAS University of London, discussed a topic on youth empowerment. – BruEssex Society

BORNEO BULLETIN: ‘BruNotts Easter Games brings students together through athleticism’

BRUNOTTS Society recently held their annual BruNotts Easter Games (BEG) for the 15th consecutive time during the Easter break at the David Ross Sports Village, the sports centre in the University of Nottingham.

Yusma Hazim bin Yusof, Postgraduate Social and Welfare Secretary, Brunei Students’ Union High Council 2017/2018, attended the event as the guest of honour.

The opening ceremony began with the singing of the national anthem followed by the recitation of Surah Al-Fatihah and Doa Selamat by Ahmad Firdaus Mohammad.

Mahmoud Adam Osman, the chief executive chairperson for the 15th BEG, in his welcoming speech thanked the players and volunteers for participating in making the event a success, as well as noting how the motto ‘Meet to Compete’ has been kept for seven years running.

He said, “This year’s BruNotts Easter Games marks its 15th anniversary of its running. Starting in 2003, it has run every year since then. Moreover, for seven years, we have kept the same motto ‘Meet to Compete’, because it encompasses what BEG is about: getting together to compete with and support each other on various sports as we showcase athleticism and sportsmanship.”

He also thanked sponsors of BEG such as Brunei Shell Petroleum as Gold Sponsor; Brunei Students’ Unit (UPP) as Silver Sponsor; and Repathlete, Eco Bumi Arkitek, and DST as Bronze Sponsors along with BruNotts alumni for their generosity and support in making the sports event possible.

Yusma Hazim supported and encouraged participating in sports, stating that it can help with mental health.

The guest of honour said, “The idea of participating in flagship events such as Winter Games, Brunei Yorkshire Games, Brunei Easter Games and LufBru Summer Games is highly encouraged. Research data based on students in the USA illustrated that, for males and females, competitive sports participation was associated with a lower frequency of mental illness, eating and dietary problems and total risk.”

The event continued with the commencement of netball, futsal, table tennis, and badminton competitions.

In the table tennis open singles, Mohd Adam Addary Thane was crowned the champion with Ibnu Ayyub Haji Mohammad securing the first runner-up spot and Yusma Hazim grabbing the second runner-up spot.

The netball competition saw ‘BruNotts’ emerging as champions in the tournament, followed by ‘Stabilo’ as runner-up and ‘Misfits’ as second runner-up.

In the badminton men’s singles event, Yusma Hazim was crowned the champion followed by Leong Jin Fatt as first runner-up and Hong Yan Jie as the second runner-up.

In the badminton men’s doubles category, the team ‘Teochiew’ won first place followed by ‘Bonobo’ and ‘BadAtMinton’ as the first and second runner-up, respectively.

In the badminton women’s singles event, Nuraina Izzati binti Othman was crowned the champion followed by Dayangku Nurul Bari’ah binti Pengiran Haji Asri as first runner-up and Wardah binti Haji Mohamed Daud as the second runner-up.

‘Smashin’ Trolls’ won first place in the badminton women’s doubles category, with ‘Mochi’ the first runner-up and ‘Breeze’ the second runner-up.

‘Nottster’ emerged as the champions in the badminton mixed doubles competition, with ‘Brusca’ the first runner-up and ‘Kau Boleh’ the second runner-up.

A total of eight teams competed for the title of futsal champion of the 15th BEG which saw ‘Selipar United’ crowned as champion of the futsal tournament after defeating runner-up ‘Team Peng’ in the finals. ‘BruNotts’ emerged as the second runner-up.

At the closing ceremony, three special awards were announced, the first being the Golden Boot Award won by Brian Lim from ‘Selipar United’ team for futsal.

The second special award went to Lavania Lakshmi Balakrishnan from team ‘Misfits’ for being the ‘Netball Star Player’ and lastly, the ‘Most Helpful Volunteer’ award went to Awangku Aiman Zufari bin Pengiran Zaini. The ‘Most Helpful Volunteer’ award was established two years prior to encourage volunteers to be more proactive in making BEG a success.

The event officially ended with a recitation of Doa by Ahmad Firdaus Mohammad followed by a commemorative photo session.

The BruNotts Easter Games (BEG) is a sports event held by BruNotts Society, a student-run society by Brunei students in Nottingham. BEG invites all Bruneians in the United Kingdom and Ireland, regardless of them being a student or not, to participate in the event as either as a player or a volunteer. BEG offers mainly four types of sports: netball, table tennis, futsal and badminton.
