BORNEO BULLETIN: ‘Proud day for Chancellor’s Scholar duo’

A SCHOLARSHIP signing ceremony for two recipients of the Chancellor’s Scholar was held in London, United Kingdom, over the weekend, marking another step forward for Universiti Brunei Darussalam (UBD) in enhancing local outstanding students’ capacities.

Hajah Hanisah binti Haji Sharif, who is currently pursuing a PhD in the field of Allergy and Clinical Immunology at Imperial College London, and Najeehah binti Haji Abdul Hamid, who is currently pursuing a Master of Philosophy in Sociology at University of Cambridge signed the agreement at the Hilton on Park Lane Hotel in London.

Guest of honour Major General (Rtd) Dato Paduka Seri Haji Aminuddin Ihsan bin Pehin Orang Kaya Saiful Mulok Dato Seri Paduka Haji Abidin, High Commissioner of Brunei Darussalam to the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland and his spouse witnessed the signing of the agreement, along with UBD Vice-Chancellor Datin Dr Hajah Anita Binurul Zahrina binti Pehin Orang Kaya Laila Wijaya Dato Seri Setia Haji Awang Abdul Aziz.

In his speech, Chancellor’s Scholar Committee Secretary Haji Mohammad Ramli bin Haji Mohd Jaafar noted that this was the fifth Chancellor’s Scholar awarded by UBD since it was incepted in 2012.

He explained that each recipient will receive guidance and mentorship from UBD to nurture their all-round development, and underlined that the recipients are now considered role models not just academically, but also in their attitude and discipline in upholding pure values of the national philosophy Malay Islamic Monarchy (MIB).

The Chancellor’s Scholar is a prestigious scholarship open to outstanding students intending to pursue academic careers. Apart from mentorship from UBD, each recipient will also undergo development and placement programmes at UBD and a number of prestigious university partners of UBD, geared towards the enhancement of their academic development and leadership skills. Following the conclusion of their studies, the scholars will be absorbed as academic staff at UBD.
